The Pioneer Woman...A Favorite Blog!

The Pioneer Woman ~ Ree Drummond

I'm sure that most of you are familiar with Ree over at The Pioneer Woman but if by chance you aren't...run right over there because not only is she hysterical, her blog is a treasure trove of information!  I think this POST is one of my favorites...the images of her life are extraordinary!  It's always a delight to read her!  Not to mention she has great recipes and random giveaways, too!
Don't be fooled by the image above, this stay at home working mother has lots to say...and she has a "real" cowboy for a husband!  Yee Haw!
Plus, as you can see she is a redhead and you know how I feel about that! :)

What do you think of my new header?
I was getting tired of the old one and what an easy way to redecorate!

CSN...A shoppers Delight! I'm like a kid in the candy store!

Oooo, I'm so thrilled!  I've been asked to review a product from the very popular CSN Stores!!!  I took a quick peek and their stores offer loads of wonderful things from cookware to ceiling lights.

Wouldn't two of these be awesome as bedside lighting instead of a traditional lamp on the table?

I hope to have made my decision and have my new item in hand soon and I will write an honest and straight forward review!  I'm so excited!

Now, if I could only decide what to get!!!

Check them out...you're going to love them!

Menu Planning and Food Budget!

The Big Guy read an article to me from the Sunday paper about menu planning as not only a means to save your sanity but your budget as well.  I have to admit that I have tried many times in the past to plan a weekly menu only to give up frustrated.
I think I'm going to give it a go again.

I'm hoping it will do two things...
1.  Keep me from the inevitable frustration at approx 4:30pm everyday when I try to decide..."What's for dinner."
2.  Reduce our overall grocery and dining out expenditures.

So, I decided to document last months food expenses and then compare them with the next four weeks, hopefully, using a menu plan I will be able to see and feel a difference.  I'll sit down each Sunday and figure out what's for dinner for the entire week.  Since The Big Guy wants us to cut way back on eating out, I'm going to plan an at home meal for every day of the week (I shudder as I write this...just kidding, though, not really).   The reason that I'm using June is that I haven't entered in all of July's expenses into Microsoft Money yet.

By the way, we are a family of 2 adults, 2 teenagers and the occasional friend or two for dinner.  We live in the Northeast.

So, here's the dirt.
Week 1:  6/6-6/12 Grocery $157.39, Dining Out $167.67
Week 2:  6/13-6/19 Grocery $453.79, Dining Out $30.50
  Week 3:  6/20-6/26 Grocery $297.15, Dining Out $173.82
Week 4:  6/27-7/3 Grocery $198.75 Dining Out $192.45

Totals: Grocery $1,107.08, Dining Out $564.44

Here is what I am planning for this weeks meals.  I haven't figured out each and every breakfast and lunch but we typically have sandwiches, cereals, muffins, bagels, etc.  I also haven't quite decided which day we will have which meal so I'm just listing them in random order for now.

Taco's (Beef & Bean)
Pasta & Meat Sauce w/french bread
Grilled Chicken Breasts over Mixed Greens
Vegetable Panini's
Rice & Beans w/salsa
Fish Taco's (Cheese Quesadillas for picky kids)
Breakfast for dinner (pancakes or eggs or some such thing).

By the way, there are food planners out there who do this kind of thing very well...they actually plan their meals around the weekly sales at their market (my mother-n-law can do this with her eyes closed).  Some even cook once a month and freeze their main entrees and then just add veggies.  Amazing to me!

To help keep me motivated I'm going to link up to a group of such planners.  You want to give it a try?

By the way, I'd like to know how our food budget stacks up to other similar size families...so, if you're willing to share, leave me a comment and let me know.  Also, if you have a favorite family friendly recipe, I'd love to know that, too!
Do you think this will make me less crazy this week?  We will see!

This is where I leave you...Jonathan Tropper. A review. Cast Ensemble.

As if I don't suffer from insomnia enough...it couldn't be helped, I just could not put this book down.
Jonathan Tropper weaves this story through his insightful, yet down on his luck protagonist, Judd Foxman's  devastation of his rat-dog cheating wife and his dysfunctional family's long time reunion at his late father's Shiva.

At times, this book is gut-wrenchingly funny and emotionally painful simultaneously.  Tropper can certainly bring out the minute detail of life with a brilliant and uncanny ability to hone in on the critical nuances of a loving yet troubled family story.

I hear that he is working with Warner Bros. to create "This is Where I Leave You" into a feature film.  I hope it works out as I will be first in line for a ticket.

My picks for the insanely funny and yet crazy Foxman family cast  (Warner Bros. listen up!):

(Judd Foxman)  Mark Ruffalo

(Jen Foxman, the cheating wife)   Mena Suvari

(Wade, The Theif)  Viggo Mortensen

(Mrs. Foxman, Mother)  Helen Mirren

(Wendy, his sister)  Joan Cusack

(Barry, Wendy's husband)  Ben Shenkman

(Paul, his brother)  Gerard Butler

(Alice, Sister-n-law)  Naomi Watts

(Phillip, his brother)  Ryan Reynolds

(Tracy, Phillips girlfriend)  Hope Davis

(Linda, neighbor) Judi Dench

(Horry, Linda's son)  Philip Seymour Hoffman

(Penny, The old friend)  Zooey Deschanel

Well, there you have it...the perfect cast for this hysterical book turned movie, are you listening Jonathan Tropper?

Read the book and tell me if these choices aren't spot on!

OM (One Moment) Meetup @ A la Mode...One moment of bliss!

I've been spending so much time at the beach this summer...it's been a wonderful time of swimming, relaxing, walking, thinking.
Yesterday, both The Big Guy and I were thrilled with the calm seas, we were able to swim out quite far...when you are out there beyond all the surfers, swimmers, and noise...it's utter bliss.

We swam out there for a very long time, the water way over our heads, the waves rolling in gently as we were not bothered by the breaks.  I can still feel the utter joy of just being in that deep water, when we turned our backs to the shore it felt as if we were truly in the midst of the deep ocean.
We stay until we've enjoyed every last second of the lovely sunsets.

I'm sharing this blissful moment at A la mode One Moment weekly meet up.

What was your "one moment" of bliss this week?

Little Bee...A review.

"The publishers of Chris Cleave's new novel "don't want to spoil" the story by revealing too much about it, and there's good reason not to tell too much about the plot's pivot point. All you should know going in to Little Bee is that what happens on the beach is brutal, and that it braids the fates of a 16-year-old Nigerian orphan (who calls herself Little Bee) and a well-off British couple--journalists trying to repair their strained marriage with a free holiday--who should have stayed behind their resort's walls. The tide of that event carries Little Bee back to their world, which she claims she couldn't explain to the girls from her village because they'd have no context for its abundance and calm. But she shows us the infinite rifts in a globalized world, where any distance can be crossed in a day--with the right papers--and "no one likes each other, but everyone likes U2." Where you have to give up the safety you'd assumed as your birthright if you decide to save the girl gazing at you through razor wire, left to the wolves of a failing state." --Mari Malcolm

I just finished Little Bee a couple days ago, and the review, above, is better said than anything I could write.  However, I want to add that this is a story that needs to be told, despite how difficult it is to hear.  This novel is well written and hard to put down and makes you think about who you are in this world in relation to others.
Highly recommended, despite truly brutal moments.

Keeping my 40+ year old red hair...red? Not so easy!

Debra Messing                                                                Me (Natural Color)

I was born a redhead (pretty much the color of Debra Messings up there).  As a child, every adult I met raved over my color, little old ladies pinched my cheeks and told me to "Thank the Good Lord, I'd been blessed with such gorgeous color."
In my youth I hated the color...yes, I was teased (rather be dead than red on the head) and the whole bit.

As I got a little older (mid twenties) and could afford to do something about it I went platinum blonde.  I kept it that way for years.  Since then I've played around with the color from various shades of blonde to brown.
Now that I'm 40+...I want my red hair back.  Not the faded mousy, white hair poking out red that I have now but the rich and glorious red hair of my youth.
Typical, huh?

I'm learning that getting back that rich red...ain't so easy!

But, I'm not giving up so easily, I mean if Julianne Moore and Debra Messing can keep their red locks gorgeous and yes, we know they are coloring...then I have to be able to do it, too.  Right?

Remember when Rene Russo when red for the Thomas Crown Affair?  Gorgeous, no?

Well, she had the help of Beth Minardi (rockin' her own red), the brilliant hair colorist to those with the $$$ to pay for it.

So, you, like me, might think...hey it can't be that much?
Right?

Well, boo hoo, it is "that much."  So, I'm left to pine away my lost color and the hopes of finding a colorist that can duplicate
Ms. Minardi's miracles on the cheap.

Wish me luck, won't you!  If you have referrals or advice...I'm all ears!

**Update: I thought I'd add a photo of my current color, since this is what inspired this post.
Natural hair color prior to coloring:

This color is a long story.  I recently had it done...I started as a natural level 7/8 copper red (see pic above) (colorist used level 6 various shades) and it came out way too dark about a level 3/4 (my opinion not the stylists) with lots of almost black streaks (my opinion confirmed by The Big Guy & kids).

I spent the last 8 days washing it with hot water & Prell (yes, I said Prell, concentrate no less) and swimming in the salty ocean trying to get the really dark streaks out.

Finally, today, I took a more strategic step (my opinion) and washed it with a mixture of Prell, baking soda and Volume 20 developer and left it on for about 12 minutes to finally arrive at this color (below), which isn't too bad.
But what on earth will I do with my level 7/8 light red roots with 20% white hairs popping out all over when it grows in?

If you look closely you can still see the almost black streaks in there.   But overall 100% better!

Answer: Find a new colorist.
